10 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ (Original Series)
Kids in the 1990s who wanted good ol’ scares but weren’t old enough to watch horror movies yet? Are You Afraid of the Dark? had them covered.
The horror anthology TV show Are You Afraid of the Dark? followed a group of teens—who referred to themselves as “The Midnight Society”—sharing scary stories at a secret location in the woods at night. The stories often involved kids facing haunted situations, including ghosts, demons, witches, clowns, vampires, plus urban legends and folklore.
Each storyteller began the latest story saying—with a tip of the hat to classic anthology series Twilight Zone—“Submitted for the approval of The Midnight Society, I call this story…,” then toss some “midnight dust” into the fire to produce smoke.
The original Are You Afraid of the Dark? show aired on Nickelodeon 1992-1996. It inspired two revival series, in 1999-2000, with another starting in 2019.
