INTRIGUING DETAILS ABOUT THE SCRIPT FOR BEETLEJUICE 2

The script for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was written by the creators of the Wednesday TV show, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The actual story was written by those two—plus novelist Seth Grahame-Smith, best known for writing the novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter.

Following the success of the original movie Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton spent a lot of time thinking about a sequel. In fact, there were actual plot ideas that began circulating.

Finally, in 2011, Burton connected with Graham-Smith, who had worked on movie adaptations of his quirky novels. At the time, the author told Collider he had a “rough idea” of what the new story could be.

“However, I should stress this: It’s not a remake, it’s not a reboot, it is a true sequel with Michael Keaton as the title character Beetlejuice. The thing that Tim and Michael and I all agree on, and is most important for me is, I don’t wanna be the guy that destroys the legacy and the memory of the first film. I would rather die. I would rather just not make it. I’d rather just throw the whole thing away than make something that pays no respect and doesn’t live up even close to the legacy of the first film.” (SOURCE)

Then, in the past couple of years, Burton started working with Wednesday showrunners Gough and Millar. The Netflix original series follows Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega) at Nevermore Academy, the boarding school that had been attended by her parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzmán). On campus, Wednesday is pulled into a supernatural murder mystery.

Gough and Millar wrote the final screenplay for the new movie. The story for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is said to involve a family tragedy that brings the Deetz family back home. When the portal to the afterlife is accidentally reopened, soon the troublesome Beetlejuice returns to cause his own brand of chaos.

Watching the new movie, Michael Keaton was surprised how emotional Beetlejuice 2 gets

Watching an early cut of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, star Michael Keaton said he wasn’t ready for how emotional the movie gets. He told SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show that he saw a couple of tweaks that were still needed before the movie would be released—but that the movie is great.

“I’ve seen it now. I’m going to see it again after a couple of little tweaks in the editing room, and I confidently say this thing is great,” Keaton said. “The [original] was so fun and exciting visually. [The sequel is] all that but really beautiful and interestingly emotional here and there. I wasn’t ready for that. It’s great.”

How Beetlejuice 2 promises a backstory for the ghost

In an interview, Michael Keaton told Jimmy Kimmel that Beetlejuice’s backstory will be part of the sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In this segment from Jimmy Kimmel Live, Keaton actually shared stuff on a few different topics—including meeting Ed McMahon, playing “Bruce Wayne” at the Oscars for Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and directing Al Pacino in a new movie. Plus there was a clip from the 1985 short film Keaton made for “David Letterman’s Holiday Film Festival.”

When the idea of character backstories came up, Keaton said:

“The great thing about playing Beetlejuice is...you never make the statement, Well, my character wouldn’t do that. He’d do anything. Which was so tremendous to play. However, in the second one—which I’m telling you is so good—there is a kind of backstory, which is kind of a surprise for everyone.”

The world of Beetlejuice—including the original movie, TV show, and more

The horror comedy Beetlejuice brand kicked off with the 1988 movie Beetlejuice. The story revolved around a deceased couple who found their former home now “haunted” by weird living people. So they called on the exorcist ghost (whose name is actually spelled like the star Betelgeuse). Then things got complicated.

The original film a big success, it led to a number of follow-ups. There was the 1989-1991 animated TV show (we talked about the fun crossover with the superhero show starring the Teen Titans), the stage musical (which we’ve also talked about), several video games, a cookbook, plus blankets, toys, costumes, and more.

And, of course, finally a sequel movie. (Which we also talked about.)
