The Stormlight Archive is a series of epic fantasy novels written by Brandon Sanderson, planned to consist of ten books. Roshar, the name of the planet on which The Stormlight Archive is set, is also the name of the supercontinent on which the series takes place.
During the Heraldic Epochs, Roshar was ruled by a coalition of ten nations known as the Silver Kingdoms. In the Era of Solitude, following the departure of the Heralds and the demise of the Orders of Knights Radiant, those kingdoms split into smaller ones. The Stormlight Archive features several different races, most often portrayed as different ethnicities of humans.
In The Way of Kings, Sanderson was looking for some sort of reservoir. “Essentially, I wanted magical batteries,” he told website Grasping for the Wind, “because I wanted to take this series toward developing a magical technology.”
