Flashback: SNL—The Devil on ‘People’s Court’ (Jon Lovitz) - 1986

“This is Vonda Braithwaite, the Plaintiff. She sold her immortal soul to the Devil in exchange for success in her hairdresing business, but now claims that the Devil cheated her. She seeks nullification of the contract, plus damages.”

During his tenure on Saturday Night Live, Jon Lovitz played Mephistopheles in a few different sketches. In this memorable clip from 1986, a dissatisfied client takes the devil to television courtroom show The People’s Court. Phil Hartman played Judge Wopner, Kevin Nealon played Doug Llewellen, guest Rosanna Arquette played plaintiff Vonda Braithwaite, and Jan Hooks played her mother.

Jon Lovitz, a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1990, was nominated for an Emmy Award his first two years on the show. Besides Mephistopheles, his other SNL characters included The Master Thespian, Hanukkah Harry, Annoying Man, and Tommy Flanagan, The Pathological Liar, who would punctuate his punctuate his labored falsehoods with the catchphrase, "Yeah! That's the ticket!" Following SNL, he starred in The Critic and has appeared in numerous other television series and films, including 20 episodes of The Simpsons.
