Marvel Comics and DC Comics both have Godzilla comics events planned for 2025

Giant monster legend Godzilla returns to American comic books in 2025—with brand-new stories scheduled at both Marvel Comics and DC Comics. The King of Monsters will be meeting up again with the likes of the Fantastic Four, Justice League, and more in brand-new comics stories next year.

Since his movie debut in 1954’s Gojira, giant monster Godzilla has made lots of appearances in the media—including like 40 movies, plus appearances on TV, in video games, and in fiction. Over the years, Godzilla has also been featured in a number of comic books, with projects from Marvel and DC, plus Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, and Legendary Comics. Some of these stories have shown Godzilla crossing paths with the likes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, S.H.I.E.L.D., Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Justice League, and more.

And the King of Monsters is heading back to both Marvel’s and DC’s comic book worlds in 2025! More info about these upcoming projects below…

Godzilla will take on the Marvel Universe across the eras

Marvel Comics recently celebrated its 1977-1979 comic book series Godzilla, King of the Monsters by writer Doug Moench and artist Herb Trimpe. This included an omnibus edition featuring the 24 issues originally published more than 40 years ago, showing agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. following Godzilla walking around the Marvel universe. Also involved in the series were Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Devil Dinosaur, and The Champions.

The King of the Monsters will make its royal return to Marvel Comics in 2025. The publisher will be following up its reprint editions with original one-shot stories set during different time periods.

The six-issue event Godzilla vs. Marvel begins with Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 by writer Ryan North and artist John Romita Jr. The story will find Marvel’s first family dealing with Galactus and his newest herald—King Ghidorah.

Bleeding Cool reports that the Fantastic Four issue will be set during the “kinda-sixties” like the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Hollywood Reporter says this new issue will also see Godzilla partner with the Silver Surfer to save the world.

The idea of the new comics began when Marvel and Toho were talking about reprinting the 1977 comics. Marvel editor in chief C.B. Cebulski says the publisher talked for years with Godzilla owner Toho about a new crossover.

“We approached them initially for our reprints, but a while after those conversations, it was clear that both of our teams were excited to do more together. We hope this will be a sign for more exciting projects to come.”

Marvel Comics has a history that goes all the way back to the 1939 publication of Marvel Comics #1. Although the company’s name at that time was Timely Comics, that issue featured the debut of Namor the Sub-Mariner and the original version of the Human Torch.

After a number of years (and more than one company name change), what we now call the Marvel Universe launched in 1961 with Fantastic Four #1. Within just a few months, the Marvel brand exploded under the creativity of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and more. Over the years since, Marvel’s brand has grown to include movies, TV, games, and more.

The list of Marvel characters also includes Spider-Man, the Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wolverine, Hulk, Storm, Daredevil, Captain Marvel, Deadpool, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 coming summer 2025

DC Comics got a visit from Godzilla (as well as Kong among other monsters) in the 2023 comic book mini-series Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong by writer Brian Buccellato and artist Christian Duce. That seven-issue limited series found the monsters meeting up with the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Batman.

“As a comics fan, there’s nothing more fun and exciting than exploring those amazing What If situations that come up when fandoms cross streams,” said DC’s Jim Lee when we reported on the first Godzilla and Kong / Justice League crossover. “In this case, it’s a matchup of the world’s greatest superheroes in the Justice League who take on not only the King of the Monsters—Godzilla—but the mighty Kong himself! It’s a crossover, no-holds-barred battle, decades in the making, and no bona fide comics fan will want to miss it!”

DC Comics announced their Godzilla comics sequel at New York Comic Con. Like the first edition, Justice League Vs Godzilla Vs Kong 2 will also feature the creative team of Brian Buccellato and Christian Duce. That comic is scheduled for summer of 2025.

The sequel will take place in Legendary’s Monsterverse and include appearances by King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra. DC says Suicide Squad character Killer Croc will transform into a kaiju in the story, and that Skull Island will be a a key location in the miniseries.

DC Comics launched in the 1930s as National Allied Publications. In 1935, they made media history by publishing New Fun, the first comic book filled with new material instead of just reprints. Over the years, the company became known as “DC,” renamed after Detective Comics.

In 1938, DC made comics history again when they introduced Superman in Action Comics #1. He turned out so popular that Superman is credited with inspiring the “costumed superhero genre.”

Over the years, DC’s list of popular media characters has also grown to include Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Flash, Vixen, Aquaman, Spectre, Phantom Stranger, Swamp Thing, Black Lightning, Justice League, Teen Titans, Suicide Squad, and more.
