‘The Mummy’ Pitch Meeting: “Why did she need help from the god of death?”
Universal’s short-lived Dark Universe—which was intended to connect together all the studio’s classic monsters a la the Marvel Cinematic Universe—began and ended with 2017’s The Mummy. The film starred Tom Cruise as a U.S. soldier who unearths the ancient tomb of a cursed Egyptian princess, played by Sofia Boutella. To set up the future films, Russell Crowe was on hand as Dr. Jekyll, who played the role of the Dark Universe’s Nick Fury.
