Complete Women of the Otherworld novels by Kelley Armstrong
Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series features vampires, werewolves, sorcerers, necromancers, and witches struggling to fit in as “normal” in the modern world. The series spreads out across novels, novellas, and short stories.
The initial idea that launched the series was a short story that the author came up with for a writer’s group.
Bitten started life as a short story,” Kelley told Internet Writing Journal. “I wrote a short story about a female werewolf, and had so much fun with the character that I decided to try putting her into a novel. That book took six-seven years to write—not only because I had a full-time job, and was raising a family, but because I was often told that a book on werewolves wouldn’t sell, so I was working on more mainstream writing at the same time. But I loved the werewolf novel, and kept returning to it. When it was done, I decided to show it to a writing instructor of mine and asked whether the project was worth pursuing. He read Bitten, and offered to recommend me to an agent. She agreed to represent me, and within two months she'd sold the book rights in various countries plus movie rights.”
One of the unique facets of the series is that Women of the Otherworld has multiple points of view. Kelley explained to McNally Robinson Booksellers that was decided as soon as the publishers asked for a series.
“I discussed it with my agent and said I didn’t want to do umpteen novels with the characters of Bitten. I love them, but after a few books…it would get very repetitive very fast. So we came up with the idea of the wider supernatural world, and creating characters in Stolen I could spin off to as narrators. That has meant infinite possibilities for the series. I just returned to my werewolves for #10 and it was as much fun as #2. I wouldn’t be saying that if it was book 10 of the werewolves!
