Carrie Vaughn is the author more than 20 novels and more than 100 short stories. She’s best known for her New York Times bestselling series of novels about a werewolf named Kitty who hosts a talk radio advice show for the supernaturally disadvantaged. In 2018, she won the Philip K. Dick Award for Bannerless, a post-apocalyptic murder mystery.
She’s also a contributor to the Wild Cards series of shared world superhero books edited by George R.R. Martin.
An Air Force brat, she survived her nomadic childhood and managed to put down roots in Boulder, Colorado, where she collects hobbies.

Interview with Carrie Vaughn about the Kitty Norville series
Q: I love the way that you took the standard view of the werewolf as the ultimate victim and turned it completely on its head with Kitty. Was that part of your original conception of the book?
“I wanted to tell the story of someone learning to stand up for herself and learning to be powerful. I didn’t want someone who was super powerful right out the gate.
“And I wrote about werewolves because I felt they kind of gotten short-changed over the last 100 years in storytelling. It’s always the beast within takes over, you can’t control yourself, you do horrible things, and then you die. And I thought let’s just get past that. Let’s assume that werewolves are okay and they can handle it and what stories can we tell then.
“And then taking the pack structure, which is another different thing that I wanted to bring to the werewolf story. And if you got someone who’s at the top of the pack and someone who’s at the bottom and it progressed naturally in the course of telling the story and developing the story and it wasn’t something I necessarily consciously set out to do.
“I really was just trying to tell this one person’s story and it got big very quickly and it got a lot bigger than I ever originally thought it would but it’s worked out very well. I’ve gotten a lot of feedback on that. It’s turned out to be, struck a chord, I think.”

Q: What inspired you to write the novel and series? And where do you draw your inspiration from in general?
“I realized that vampires and werewolves and other supernatural creatures living in the modern world would need their own advice shows, because Dr. Laura and Dr. Phil just wouldn’t know what to do with their problems. From that small beginning, the idea blew up, since Kitty and her show gave me a chance to write just about any kind of story I wanted, with lots of great supporting characters.
“As far as inspiration in general—everywhere, really. A piece of music, a piece of art, a news story. Not liking the way some other story or movie turns out and wanting to tell my own version. My own obsessions and demons.”

Q: How important is setting to you when writing a story or writing a book?
“It’s kind of deceptively important, because it’s not something I necessarily think about a lot. But it does end up anchoring the story. Initially, I wasn’t going to set it in a specific city. I wanted to have it in an unnamed city that could be any city, and my editor said, ‘No, you’ve really got to pick a city and have it be concrete.’
“I picked Denver because that was the most familiar, but on thinking about it, Denver’s the perfect city for this kind of story because you have the very urban setting where you can tell urban stories. You’re an hour away from the mountains where you can tell wilderness stories. I’ve got my werewolf characters who are both civilized and wild, and I can tell both those kinds of stories in the same setting.
“And I like going to other cities because it lets me tell other stories. I personally like traveling, so it’s in my nature to want to go to other places. But it also really opens up the kinds of stories I can tell. Las Vegas, especially. Making Las Vegas supernatural, I didn’t have to do any work. It’s already there.
“There actually is a production show based around vampires. It’s called Bite. You see the billboards on the trucks driving through town, and it’s topless vampires dancing on stage. If I had made that up, nobody would have believed me, but it’s actually there. Things like that really add to the world. It makes the world of the novel have that much more depth.”
