Toho vs. Marvel for ‘Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe’ comic book event
July 2025 five-part event sees King of the Monsters battle heroes and villains in “pop culture-shattering” showdown.
As we continue to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the debut of Godzilla, this has been a big year for kaiju fans who read comics! As we previously reported on Monster Complex, there have been a few comic book crossovers involving Japanese giants and American superheroes.
This July, the crossovers list will now grow to include the five-part mini-series Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe. Following the (still going on right now) series of one-shots where Godzilla has already been dealing with Fantastic Four and Hulk and X-Men (among others), this new project cranks up the volume as Godzilla will now take on (pretty much) everyone in Marvel Comics.
From the team of writer Gerry Duggan and artist Javier Garrón, the comic book mini-series promises Godzilla fighting the combined might of the entire Marvel Universe.
Notes Toho’s Kristin Parcell:
“Godzilla has always been a relentless force of nature, and battling the icons of the Marvel Universe is the perfect way to celebrate 70 years of the King of Monsters. Our continued collaboration with Marvel, bringing Godzilla into the vast Marvel Universe, guarantees an unmatched, electrifying experience for fans of both legendary franchises.”
Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe
The 5-issue event finds Godzilla is now awake and angry and carving out a path of annihilation. When The Avengers fail to stop the rampage, they have to reach out for any help they can get—which includes joining forces with Earth’s most dangerous villains! In the face of an unstoppable force of nature, the Marvel Universe must come together like never before in this earth-shattering fight for Earth’s survival.
When event writer Duggan was growing up, Godzilla was as important to him as Marvel Comics:
“My father enjoyed watching baseball on TV, and I would root for rain outs so the NYC stations would run a Godzilla movie. When I discovered that Godzilla had appeared in the Marvel Universe, I obsessively collected every issue. I can’t believe how lucky I am to be contributing to the tradition of Godzilla rampaging in the Marvel Universe. This is the very biggest event of the summer, and everyone is getting in on the action. Javier Garrón is doing the very best work of his career, and this will be an immortal comic book. Get ready to run for your life this July!”
Garrón is also excited with the project:
“It is—excuse the pun—a monstrous opportunity to team up again with Gerry,” Garrón says. “Not only one of the best writers in comics but the only person who could do justice to this story with his bold, wild, extremely funny and epic scripting. Letting none other than the King of the Monsters loose in the Marvel Universe means a lot to me and it’s all a creator could ask for in a comic. The sheer scale! The cast—everybody! The destruction—everything! It’s a no-holds-barred conflict, and I'm having the time of my life wreaking havoc with Gerry and the rest of the team.”
This new 5-issue event literally follows the series of five one-shots where Godzilla has been meeting up with Marvel characters like the Fantastic Four (which just happened in March), the incredible Hulk (happening April 16), the amazing Spider-Man (April 30), the uncanny X-Men (May 14), and the Avengers (June 18).
Says editor Mark Paniccia:
“In our previous one shots, fans have seen some wild and unexpected moments,” “But I promise you that Gerry will have everyone stunned, shocked and craving more with this series! It’s jam-packed with explosive beats that will surprise and thrill both Godzilla and Marvel fans!”
The first issue of Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe is scheduled to hit (heh) July 16.
